As social media continues to rise in popularity its an often asked question does my small business really need a website?
After many years of helping small businesses develop and grow their online brands I can honestly say the answer to this question is Yes and No and it really is a question that only you the business owner can answer.
If you are like so many who look at a website as a cost rather than an investment into a universal tool that can help compliment, shape, mould and direct your marketing campaigns, then no a website is probably not for you.
Despite the importance of having an online presence for your business a massive 60% of small businesses in the UK still have little to no online presence at all.
For it to work at all a website has to have and start with a purpose, that purpose can change dramatically depending on what you do, your niche and what your own aims are for your business. Want to build a mailing list?, allow customers to place orders?, take bookings and deposits for your services? , provide niche related information via a blog? and lets also not forget having all of your basic business information such as opening hours and up to date contact information ready and at hand at all times. All of this and more can be achieved with a website, that is essentially a one time investment that you own and have full control how it works, looks and feels. As an indication the cost of a website is often less than putting an advert in your local newspaper twice a year! Doesn’t seem like that much of a cost when you look at that comparison now does it! Does anyone still use newspaper advertising in 2017?
As I mentioned in the opening of this post social media is a huge deal right now but trends come and go, remember Myspace? No? your not the only one, it was the big thing before it was closed in 2009. At the moment it’s Facebook closely followed by Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter that is demanding all of our attention but how long will it stay that way? While its hard to see Facebook going anywhere anytime soon it almost seems foolish not to be converting your followers externally to a website. I often see so much good content posted online with no real clear call to action.. a simple visit our website and sign up to our mailing list to receive our most up to date content can go along way to developing long lasting relationships with clients.
So if you are prepared to give your marketing strategy some thought, direction and give your website a purpose then yes your small business needs a website.
